Mothering Sunday, a day we dedicate to showering our mum’s with appreciation and love for all their efforts over the years. Much to the delight of our lovely mothers, appreciation is quite often accompanied by a present, just to confirm how grateful we actually are. So as many of us pondered the perfect gift, businesses were throwing out mum-related hashtags left, right and centre in a bid to win the custom of sons and daughters across the country. Although the aim of the game is simple, creating an effective hashtag can be harder than it seems and if you get it wrong, well, it can be pretty ugly!

One company that learnt the hard way last week was . Its campaign aimed to convince its audience that a well-chosen book is the ideal Mother’s Day gift. However, its innocent hashtag ‘#YourMum” attracted some rather different responses to what the company had in mind – think back to the classic “your mum’s…” school playground jokes.

This Mother’s Day campaign is a perfect example of why every hashtag should be thoroughly checked. If there’s a chance that the message could get horribly twisted, is it really worth the risk? We think not.

Don’t let this unfortunate event put you off the running a Twitter campaign or choosing a strong hashtag though. There has been some brilliant hashtags surrounding Mothering Sunday; one that really caught our eye was  #SozMum.

The campaign encouraged users to confess all to their mums, particularly those things they had done as a child or young adult. The campaign then asked those social media users making a confession to donate £3 via text and nominate a friend.

It’s safe to say the campaign bought about some hilarious and very familiar results; here are a couple of our favourites courtesy of Twitter:

“#SozMum for pouring ALL of your toiletries & cosmetics into the bathroom to make ‘George’s Marvelous Medicine’ – a sad end for your Chanel No 5”

“It wasn’t Lee who drank all your vodka and replaced it with water…#SozMum”

“#SozMum for drawing on the cupboards when I was seven years old…I thought Grandma would like it”

So there you have it, the good and the bad (and the ugly responses) of Mother’s Day hashtags. We’ve had a good old giggle about these campaigns in the MPAD office, for one reason or another, but they also shown the importance of choosing the correct hashtag for your campaign.
