New owners for Cornwall’s highest inn

Client PR, Worldwide Financial Planning / No Comments

A family from west Cornwall is settling into life at one of the oldest inns in Cornwall following support from an award-winning firm of independent financial advisers.

Melvyn and Christine Hooper, together with their daughter and son-in-law, Victoria and Joss Trathen, have taken over the running of the Old Inn at St Breward on Bodmin Moor.

The family took over the inn, which is also the highest in Cornwall, after receiving support from Truro and Wadebridge based Worldwide Financial Planning.

“We’ve had a great response since we took over,” said Melvyn.

“It was great to get in and the support we received from Worldwide really helped us get the deal through quickly.

“After the busy opening period we’re now working on our food and are introducing a lot more game, such as venison, wild duck, pheasant, rabbit and woodcock, to the menu.

“Considering we’re on the moors we felt that game was under used previously. Our customers are really enjoying the addition and the game pie has proved to be particularly popular.”

The Old Inn, which was built around 1,000 years ago by monks who lived in it while they were constructing the Norman church in St Breward, become an inn in the 13th century.

Worldwide’s commercial finance adviser, Rebecca Bendle, said: “Funding for businesses, particularly in the hospitality sector, has been tough.

“We’ve all heard stories about banks not lending to people in this market, but deals are being done if everything can be put in place.

“What really helped here was that the Hooper family had a great plan, a track record in business, and were taking over one of Cornwall’s landmark inns.

“I’m looking forward to hearing of their success over the coming years.”

The inn was marketed by Scott Burridge Commercial on behalf of a private client and had a lease guide price of £110,000 with an asking rent of £65,000.

Scott Burridge Commercial’s Russell Weetch, said: “The inn had been on the market for several months as a freehold property.

“We worked with the owner and changed the agreement to leasehold. Once that was in place the interest increased and the deal with Mr Hooper and his family was agreed quickly.

“The family has agreed a 12 year full repairing and assuring lease with three year reviews.”

Melvyn and Christine, who were previously in the pub trade in Wiltshire before moving to Cornwall 10 years ago, also run Coachline Feed Stores, a petshop and animal feed store in Redruth.
