Air Ambulance Shortlisted for Sustainability Awards

Client PR, Cornwall Air Ambulance / No Comments

The shortlist for the Cornwall Sustainability Awards 2012 is now out and amongst the nominees is the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust.

Its new operations headquarters at Newquay has been shortlisted in the New Build Category.

Paula Martin, CEO for the charity said, “Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust is delighted to have been shortlisted in the Cornwall Sustainability Awards.

“The term sustainability doesn’t just apply to a construction project, the charity itself has to be sustainable and this building will help us to achieve that.”

The project started in 2010, to design and build a sustainable facility capable of fulfilling the primary role of the trust, to save lives, by providing it with a functional and stable base for the future.

“There were so many factors that needed taking into account.” Added Paula.

“The helicopter needed a permanent home, the emergency crew needed a space the allowed them to develop their skills, regroup between missions and maintain emergency equipment.

“The back office team needed a modern, scalable office environment that could grow with their needs enabling them to support the crew and carry out the vital fundraising activities.”

Nearly £1m in funding was secured from the ERDF Convergence programme and, following a successful planning application, principle contractors Morgan Sindall were appointed.

Construction started in April 2011 and was completed in January 2012 and the charity moved the entire operation across in February.

“We were determined to keep the running costs of this building as low as possible.” Said Paula.

“The fabric of the building, passive design elements and renewable energy systems within the building have all helped the building achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ for both the construction phase

    and the finished building.”

Part of the contract stipulated that at least 65% of the value of subcontracts and supplies went to Cornish firms, which meant that much of the money stayed in the local economy.

    Paula is understandabl

y proud of the project, saying, “The whole design team should feel very proud that our new headquarters has been shortlisted for this prestigious award.

“The end result is a fabulous place to work and volunteer.

It is also amazing for our supporters to visit, to see at first hand how vital the life saving air ambulance is to Cornwall.

“The building is highly functional, but it also has a lovely community feel about it.”

The Cornwall Air Ambulance provides an important service to Cornish residents and visitors.

The Air ambulance attends around 1000 incidents each year, making it one of the busiest in the UK, and is financed entirely by public donations and fundraising.
