CHICKS is a charity based in Cornwall and Devon, which provides week long respite breaks for disadvantaged children from across the UK, who would not otherwise have a break in that year. The children the charity supports come from a variety of backgrounds – those living in poverty, children that are being neglected or abused, either mentally, physically or sexually, children who have lost parents or even children who are full time young carers.
Strategy: To promote CHICKS’ Christmas breaks and help generate fundraising income of £30,000,without impacting its usual fundraising, and increase the number of individual donors through supporting CHICKS’ marketing officer and increasing local and regional press coverage.
Delivery: Worked with CHICKS’ marketing officer and head of fundraising to create a press release calendar based around events and milestones. Supported marketing officer through mentoring and helping to build connections with local and regional media. Provided press office function to support build up to Christmas.
Impact: Generated 46 pieces of local and regional press coverage – on and offline (compared to 23 in 2001 and 27 in 2012). This generated reach of 989,959 people (compared to 404,143 in 2011 and 762,828 in 2012). Increased number of individual donors to 174 (compared to 44 in 2011 and 95 in 2012). Generated £31,137 (compared to £27,025.05 in 2011 and £27,528.49 in 2012). Usual fundraising increased to £22,270 (compared to £21,431 in 2011 and £18,624 in 2012). Added value: Used contacts at Hall for Cornwall and arranged for children on break at Tywardreath to meet cast of Cinderella after they had seen the panto.
